The community of Castle Hills is deeply mourning the tragic loss of Jazz Joseph Fernandez, 24, who died on March 25, 2026, after an officer-involved shooting. The incident occurred following a hit-and-run on Loop 410 near the Blanco Road interchange early Wednesday morning.
According to authorities, Fernandez was involved in a hit-and-run crash, after which he exited his vehicle and, while reportedly holding an edged weapon, approached a responding officer. Dash-cam footage from the scene showed the officer backing up before firing, ultimately fatally wounding Fernandez.
Eyewitness Efren Young recounted the shocking moments of the event, describing the situation as terrifying. “You would never think that you would see this like in person, right in front of you at that time,” Young said, reflecting on the emotional impact of witnessing the event. “I was at a loss for words. I was shaking. I just didn’t know what to do.”
Abel Pena, a former FBI agent, reviewed the dash-cam footage and commented on the officer’s swift response. “Any reasonable person would perceive that as a threat,” he stated. He believed that the officer’s actions appeared to be appropriate in protecting both himself and others in the situation.
