According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office (TPSO) Major Crash team, the accident occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. on Ponders Quarters Lane, just south of Amite. A southbound Amtrak train collided with a pickup truck as it attempted to cross the railroad tracks. Dorian, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was ejected during the impact and tragically pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries and was later treated and released from a local hospital.
At the time of the crash, the train was carrying approximately 149 passengers. While no serious injuries were reported among them, one passenger required medical attention for a panic attack following the incident. Emergency responders arrived quickly, securing the area, assisting passengers, and managing the aftermath of the collision.
Investigators with the TPSO Major Crash team are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that a possible mechanical issue, such as a brake malfunction in the truck, may have played a role.
